We were on the first stop of Wesley Stromberg and Spencer Sutherland’s tour at The Mint in Los Angeles,CA. Spencer stepped on stage first and was completely engaging the crowd with his music. He played a few covers and some originals including “Girls” and “Selfish”. When Wesley took the stage to play his set the crowd was ready. Wesley himself played a few covers (and originals including new song “Pack Your Bags”), he even brought Spencer out during his set. There were several familiar faces on stage and off including Jake Miller, Andrew Garcia, David Scarzone, Amber Frank, Madison Iseman, Zack Zilla, Jack and Jack, Keaton Stromberg and many more!
This was a successful night as it was Wesley’s first show as a solo artist and who better to go on tour with than his best friend Spencer. We had a chat with both about their upcoming projects, music, touring and Holidays!
Spencer Sutherland Interview:
Spy News Magazine: Just released music video for “Girls”, what was your favorite part of filming it?
Spencer: “Girls” was really fun to film because I knew it was gonna be a gift for my fans so I was able to put all my artistry into it. The funniest part was we actually shot it outside of my apartment, just on Ventura Blvd. We found this cool chain link fence and this other cool gate, we actually shot part of it in front of a Chase bank. The blue light was really cool!
Spy News Magazine: What was the writing process like, for this and all your songs?
Spencer: It’s different for every song. It’s like a real live thing. I like working with someone, bounce ideas off each other. You both kind of go till you get something that feels cohesive. Just chemistry, those are the best songs.
Spy News Magazine: How did the tour with Wesley come about?
Spencer: Wesley is my best friend, so he invited me on tour and I was like “Absolutely Dude!”. Not only do I want to play in front of people but I’m hanging out with my best friend on the road!
Spy News Magazine: Any pranks that are going to be happening?
Spencer: There’s going to be a lot! There’s already a couple.
Spy News Magazine: Today is your first stop, how are you feeling?
Spencer: So good, I’m so excited to play all this new music. I’m able to finally play for people the stuff I’ve been writing for the last year. It’s really, really exciting! This is the music that I’m most excited about and the most me I’ve ever had.
Spy News Magazine: Any pre show rituals?
Spencer: Iced coffee. Lot’s of Iced Coffee, lots of water and I love hanging out with people but like 5 minutes before I go onstage, there’s gotta be like nobody there. It’s gotta be just me. Not really any crazy stuff, maybe some push ups.
Spy News Magazine: You sang “Selfish” for the first time, why did you decide to sing it tonight?
Spencer: “Selfish” is a song that I’m very, very excited about that I wrote with a guy named Cameron Bryer and it’s the song that defines how I feel my sound is.
Spy News Magazine: Any future projects in the works?
Spencer: Yes, I have a single coming out in the next couple months followed by an EP, followed by touring!
Spy News Magazine: You seem to be inspired by several different genres including RnB, what artists do you look up to musically?
Spencer: Bruno Mars, number one. Elvis, I love Elvis. That doesn’t really translate into my music but the whole thing that Elvis is – the person and the artist. Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ne-Yo.
Spy News Magazine: How do you express yourself through fashion, music and any creative outlet?
Spencer: Fashion- I just wear clothes that I like a lot. A lot of people wear stuff that they think people will like. I’ve done it at some point, everyone has done that. I got to a point that I started wearing clothes and shoes that I love. That just happened in the last year, where I’ve been really like “Screw what everyone else thinks”. Literally just do you.
Spy News Magazine: Holidays are approaching, what’s the best part for you?
Spencer: Christmas, unfortunately I’m going to miss Thanksgiving with my family this year. First time ever. I have a show in Atlanta then Thanksgiving is the next day. I might have a show in New Jersey on the 25th so I gotta have Thanksgiving in a hotel with my guitarist and drummer. It’ll be fine, it’ll be an experience. Christmas is my favorite though!
Wesley Stromberg Interview:
Spy News Magazine: Tonight was your first time performing as a solo act, how was that experience?
Wesley: It was really, really fun. First time I didn’t have my brother and Drew on stage with me. It honestly felt pretty free. Like it’s all just me and I don’t have to worry about anybody else messing up or saying the wrong thing. I can just be myself and capture a moment and an audience. It was really fun to fill out the room and just pick songs that I felt like people would like to hear in this moment in time and that was really fun.
Spy News Magazine: You had a lot of special guests/friends come to support you tonight.
Wesley: Oh it was awesome! I hit up all my family, I had Jake Miller, The Jacks – Jack and Jack guys, Sammy Wilk, all the homies. Just good guys, great friends. Spencer obviously. Spencer Sutherland is opening he’s just such a great guy, good heart, good soul. I couldn’t ask for a better opener.
Spy News Magazine: How is the studio process for your music now that you’re a solo act?
Wesley: This is one of my favorite things about being a solo artist! Cause I get to go in there and work with my brother or I work with this other guy, his name is Alec, and it’s like okay Wes “What are you feeling today? What is going on in your life? What are the struggles or the happy things that you’re dealing with or doing?” It’s so honest and raw. It’s so refreshing to just get to talk about what I am going through and see if it connects with people. It’s amazing.
Spy News Magazine: You’re on tour, what are you looking forward as you head to each city?
Wesley: I’m looking forward to the excited fans that are basically like my fans. For the first time ever there’s people showing up to see me, not Emblem 3. I built up this big brand with my brother and Drew but now it’s just me. So when the fans show up they’re my fans and that is the best feeling ever. I’m just excited to see who turns up in every city.
Spy News Magazine: You’re touring with one of your best friends, Spencer. What are the vibes like on the road?
Wesley: Perfect! So fun! We wake up early, we work out. It’s just jokes and happy good vibes all day. We’re just sharing the bus and having a blast together so it’s awesome!
Spy News Magazine: What projects/singles can we expect from you in the upcoming months?
Wesley: I’m going to be releasing a couple of songs via my app, that I’m releasing. I’m releasing my own app. I’m going to be putting out songs for free on there so a couple of singles leading up to the end of the year. Hopefully next year around early spring I’ll be releasing my own EP or album. I’m shopping the labels right now and figuring out who’s the best family to go with. Hopefully it’s a pretty big launch. Either way, it’s going to be good music. I’m just excited.
Spy News Magazine: Thanksgiving is coming up, what’s your favorite dish?
Wesley: *Laughs* Pumpkin Pie! A pound of pumpkin pie.
